I-495 HOT Lanes Water Main Relocation

Public Information Meeting

A public meeting will be held at 7PM on April 9, 2008 at Fairfax Water’s office located at 8570 Executive Blvd, Fairfax to present alignment for the proposed water main relocations between Braddock Road and Chain Bridge Road. The water main project will be heard by the Fairfax County Planning Commission on May 1, 2008. Preliminary design of this project is currently under way. The current project schedule is shown below.

Fluor-TransUrban, an independent roadway construction firm contracted by VDOT under the Public/Private Transportation Act, will be installing water main relocations, necessitated by this project, in conjunction with the roadway and interchange improvements. Design and pipeline inspection services will be performed by Fairfax Water.

Roadway improvement design is underway for the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495). This will include the widening of the beltway to include two new High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes, and associated sound barriers, drainage structures, bridge and interchange improvements. Existing water main in conflict with roadway construction will be relocated. This will involve approximately 15,000 feet of 24-inch through 54-inch water main and associated appurtenances along the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495), between Braddock Road (Route 620) and the Chain Bridge Road (Route 123). The proposed water mains are in the Braddock, Mason and Providence Districts, and as shown on the enclosed maps.

Approximately 9000’ of the existing 42-inch water main, adjacent to Interstate 495 from the Gallows Road (Route 650) interchange north to Lee Highway (Route 29), will be replaced with an oversized 54-inch water main. The increased size of the water main will provide greater reliability and flexibility in serving Fairfax County, and will maintain the existing flow and pressure requirements. It will also alleviate the need to install a parallel water main at a later date.

The proposed water main relocations will be located in the proposed VDOT right-of-way and existing Fairfax Water easement where possible; however, some of the relocations will require new Fairfax Water permanent and temporary easements. Construction related impacts will be minimized as much possible on affected properties.
