Corbalis to Fox Mill Water Main

Public Information Meeting

A second public meeting was held on December 6, 2006, at Dogwood Elementary School to present several alternative alignments and construction methods for the proposed 54-inch transmission main between Sunrise Valley Drive and the Fox Mill Pumping Station. The recommended alternative is an alignment within the existing easement along the eastern edge of the Fairfax County Parkway and includes a 7,850 foot tunnel from Sunset Hills Road to Fox Mill Road, and 2,320 feet of open-cut construction from Fox Mill Road to the pumping station on the parkway side of the existing sound walls. The recommended alternative was approved by the Fairfax County Planning Commission in July 2007. Final design of this project is currently under way. The current project schedule is shown below.

To serve the growing demand in western Fairfax County, Fairfax Water must expand the capacity of the water transmission system. The first phase of this water main from the water treatment plant to New Dominion Parkway was constructed in 2001.

The new 54-inch pipeline will extend this main to the Fox Mill Pumping Station just south of Fox Mill Road, where a new generator will be installed for use during power outages. The additional transmission capacity provided by the new water main will benefit all customers in the western part of Fairfax County.

The project includes the construction of approximately 11,300-feet of new 54-inch diameter water main along the east side of the Fairfax County Parkway (Route 7100) from south of Fox Mill Road (Route 665) to south of New Dominion Parkway. The new water main parallels an existing 48-inch diameter water main that was installed in the 1970’s. The new water main will be constructed in existing easements and right-of-way.

Project construction is estimated to take approximately 22 months. During construction, traffic on the Fairfax County Parkway and on all connecting roads will be maintained without the need for shutdowns of lanes. Effort will be made to minimize dust, silt and erosion during construction. When the project is completed, all disturbed unpaved areas will be graded and seeded. Paved areas impacted by the construction will be repaved to meet Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) standards.

This water system improvement will provide increased water system capacity and reliability for homeowners and businesses in western Fairfax County.
